The Southern Region Editing/Reporting Pilot Project has named the five stations that will participate in the second phase of editor training and mentoring funded by the NPR Local News Initiative hubs project. The stations were selected to represent a range of locations and market and newsroom size. They include:
- Florida Public Radio (Tallahassee) - a statewide network with 7 journalists
- WQCS-FM (Fort Pierce, FL) -- 5 full-time news staffers who work in many capacities at the station, including director of the reading service.
- WUOT-FM (Knoxville, TN) - 3 full-time journalists and 1 intern
- WJCT-FM (Jacksonville, FL) - a 4-person newsroom
- WRKF-FM (Baton Rouge, LA) -- a single-person newsroom
The news director/senior editors at each station will work intensively with Southern Region Editor-Mentor Dale Willman for the next six months.
The Southern Project was designed by the Southern Radio Network, a newly formed organization. Its mission is to strengthen the quality of news produced across the Southeast, bring more stories to national news magazines and create greater collaboration through training activities and the exchange of stories throughout the region.
The Local News Initiative is a national effort to help stations cover their communities the way NPR covers the world. The LNI pursues this goal through projects that improve programming quality, develop station talent, and encourage more efficient and collaborative use of resources.
