How to Run an Editorial Meeting

Take Action

The pivot point in an effective editorial meeting comes after stories are pitched. You will have a multitude of ideas on a whiteboard, and now your new team must choose what to cover, based on what listeners want, and what resources are available.

At this point the editorial meeting leader assigns reporters and producers, gets agreement on story format, and establishes deadlines. Participants should be clear on what's expected of them for the day or week. The meeting ends. But the collaboration does not.

Reporters and producers should continue the brainstorming, and track down sources, with each other and with the News Director. Everyone should be open to story angles changing, and story formats as well. Something that was assigned as a short feature in the editorial meeting may get reduced to a spot, or may morph into a Q&A depending on the news gathered
